There are 7 stages to game development.

  1. PLANNING
  • where you come up with an idea of a video game
  • what type of video game are you producing?
  • what are some key features your video game will have?

2. PRE-PRODUCTION

  • where you brainstorm how to give your ideas life
  • think of the setting, what characters, come up with the plot, etc.

3. PRODUCTION

  • this is the most challenging step
  • where character models are designed, audio is created, designers craft the environment, developers write coding, etc.
  • most expensive step too

4. TESTING

  • every feature has to be tested before ready
  • for example, some peoples job is to run a character into a wall to find a glitch
  • developers check for buggy areas to see if everything on the screen is working, character dialogue, etc.

5. PRE-LAUNCH

  • this is the first time your game is released to the public
  • this step will require marketing to draw viewers attention
  • ads, sample of gameplay, etc.

6. LAUNCH

  • your game is officially released!
  • the most exciting part!

7. POST-LAUNCH

  • you finally get sales off of your video game
  • have to release software updates for the game over time
  • have to continuously release fresh content to keep the game alive (this helps bring in more players and sales)
